5 Tips for Surviving a Chaotic Nursing Shift!!

Author: James Reynolds, CEO BeneFIT Medical Apparel

You’re 11 hours into a shift. Understaffed because (insert unreliable co-worker’s name here) called in “sick”. You’re hungry, tired, your feet hurt, have zero patience left for anything, and to top it off you begin to develop a minor headache from all the chaos.

Sound all too familiar to anyone? If not, consider yourself lucky! If so, we are here to help you manage and deal with some of these trials and tribulations you may encounter during a CHAOTIC NURSING SHIFT!!

Some of you reading this may be thinking, “Man, this is pretty dramatic, my nursing job is easy!” while others are thinking, “This article is describing my shift every day!”. Easy or chaotic, these tips can be applied to any shift to give you a better overall experience and outlook on the important job that you perform.

So let’s jump right into then!

1.For Starters, Get your mind Right!: The importance of this cannot be stressed enough because it will dictate the success of everything else. If you wake up not wanting to go to work or with a bad attitude then you’re already setting yourself up for failure. Negativity is also contagious, meaning if you are on shift complaining to others it will pollute the entire work environment while also giving you the reputation of “that nurse no one wants to work with”. You know who I’m talking about don’t you? And if you don’t, you may already be that nurse!

Complaining never solves any problems or produces results…but an optimistic mindset can change the entire course of your shift, and well your life.

2.Plan Ahead: This tactic can easily save your life, and prevent your “Hangry” attitude. Before going into a shift, plan like you’re getting ready for the zombie apocalypse when it comes to food and supplies and you’ll be ready for anything. Whether it’s meal prepping, bringing a change of our athletic fit scrubs, bringing a gallon of Starbucks or any other necessitates you’ll need during your shift.  This can easily be accomplished the night before you’re scheduled, allowing you proper time for preparation rather than franticly throwing everything into a bag the morning-of because you decided to hit snooze on your phone 6 times too many!

3.Stay Positive: No matter how well you plan, there always be days where all hell breaks loose and crap hits the fan, or maybe onto your scrubs for that matter. When this happens it is IMPERITIVE for you to stay positive until the storm dies down. Some things are always going to be out of your control… so what’s the point of wasting precious time and energy worrying about them? So just go with the flow, keep a positive outlook on the situation and you will make it through your shift with a smile on your face and a not a belly full of your Patient’s Anti-Depression Meds. (Never take your Patient’s Meds…ever)

4.Know that you’re making a Difference: This is huge! You work in the Healthcare Industry. You’re a Healthcare Pro. You take care of others needs on a daily basis. You’re literally a real life Superhero. Most of the time you’re the only person patients come in contact with that day. They could be going through terrible circumstances but you have the power to positively impact their life not only physically but mentally as well. No matter what ANYONE tells you, NEVER forget how important your job is and the difference you make on a daily basis. Most jobs can’t make that claim, but you can, and you’ve earned that right.

5. Embrace the Suck: This is kind of self-explanatory, but when the shift sucks and there’s nothing you can do about it…just simply embrace it. The sooner you accept that a portion of your day is not going to be enjoyable, the sooner you can move on and successfully do your job to the fullest. Sure not every day will be like this but they will still happen just like they do in any other job. The struggle is real and there is no way around it. Welcome to life in general!

Take these tips and try and apply them to your nursing career or whatever healthcare field you may be in and see if they make a difference. Chances are if you truly commit to them consistently they will turn a shift from hell into an awesome opportunity to make a difference in other people’s lives…while providing fulfillment in your own.

How Tulsa Air Force Veterans Launched the Most Popular Scrub Brand in the U.S..

When you think of medical scrubs you think of boxy, baggy, sloppy looking garments that resemble a trash bag or potato sack which doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals have to wear on a daily basis. But Why? Why has no one taken the time to develop something WAY better for those that deserve the highest level of comfort and confidence to perform at their highest level?

Scrubs are a uniform, a status symbol which represent what medical professionals do for a living day-in and day-out taking care of other’s needs. It’s like seeing a businessman in a suit, officer in their uniform, or military member in their fatigues. By seeing their specific uniform you can easily identify that they are a highly trained, intelligent individual that is proud of what they do. The uniforms just listed are all legit, so why did scrubs get left out of the “cool” category?

Team BeneFIT thought the same thing…so they did something about it!

Now that you have a brief idea of what they do, let’s talk about who they are, and how they did it.

The company name “BeneFIT” was derived from the desire to provide a high quality, versatile product “beneficial” to Medical Professionals in as many ways possible. A product that looked great, felt great, fit great, and performed exceptionally. The “FIT” in the title is capitalized to put emphasis on not only the higher quality of the fit but also the fitness mentality that is meant to be instilled on healthcare professionals. BeneFIT was built on a foundation of hard work, determination, and strategically directed action to not only be successful, but to promote healthier lifestyles for all types of healthcare professionals.

BeneFIT was originally comprised of three founders: James Reynolds, Dylan Croslin, and Justin Culver who are all Oklahoma natives. (Dylan has since moved on to pursue other goals) They are also all U.S. Air Force Veterans and before BeneFIT they were just three regular guys who had a passion for creating something better for hardworking healthcare professionals.

Their military training instilled within them a high level of discipline, determination, and motivation to be successful at any task put before them, to include business. The Air Force core values are “Integrity First, Service before Self, and Excellence in all you do”. These core values provided an insight into the mentality that BeneFIT wanted to reflect in their personal, military, and business lives.

James and Dylan have been friends for years and began discussing the idea of starting a business in both the health, fitness, and fashion industries in late 2014. This casual “What if?” conversations soon turned into “Why are we still talking about it? Let’s do this.”, and “BeneFIT” Medical Apparel, an athletic fit medical scrub designed for health and fitness conscious Medical Professionals was born. The two then began extensive research into the medical scrub industry before developing their first prototypes.

In the summer of 2015, about 6 months after they began their journey James and Dylan served on an Active Duty Air Force mission. Among their Air Force team, James and Dylan were accompanied by a like-minded individual named Justin Culver. After hundreds of Entrepreneurial type conversations with Justin, James and Dylan decided to offer the fellow Air Force Veteran a partnership opportunity.

In October of 2015, James and Dylan added Justin to the BeneFIT team creating a Triumvirate of passion and knowledge. They then spent the next 8 months developing the foundation necessary to ensure BeneFIT was a success and the product they offered was of the highest quality. From product testing, supply chains, and distribution to trademarks, brand awareness, and market research it was a wild ride. But that was all part of the journey of building their business and they understood that nothing great ever comes easy. Fast Forward to May 2016 and BeneFIT Medical Apparel officially launched! The initial success they experienced far exceeded their expectations and they haven’t looked back ever since.

Although watching their business thrive and flourish is fulfilling, they all insist their much larger vision and goal is to start a trend of health promotion within the healthcare industry. Healthcare professionals at times spend 12-16 hours a day taking care of others physical and mental needs which leaves little time and energy for them to focus on their own. So if BeneFIT athletic scrubs can inspire one individual to go on a jog on their lunch break or walk the stairs in their athletic scrubs then the actual goal will be achieved.

The three say the most rewarding part of what they do is the countless scrub selfies they receive every day from active healthcare professional’s repping their scrubs and living an active lifestyle. BeneFIT as a company strives to continue to be different than other scrub brands and not treat scrubs as a “commodity” or something healthcare professionals HAVE to wear but instead something they WANT to wear.

Blending a systems view of health with a lifestyle of diet and fitness, BeneFIT Medical Apparel is creating the Medical Lifestyle of the future for, and with, the brightest and most fit Medical Professionals on the planet.

3 Easy Tips to Burn Calories on your Nursing Shift

Author: James Reynolds, CEO BeneFIT Medical Apparel

IF you work in the medical industry you know the struggles when it comes to trying to juggle a hectic work schedule while also staying in shape. Often you spend 12 hours a day taking care of others needs which leaves little to no time for your own. Which is why although you are highly educated on how to be healthy you have no time or energy to practice your knowledge.

Most people think you need to go to the gym for an hour or two straight to have results when it comes to staying in shape. Sure, this works but if you do multiple little things throughout the day rather than all at once it also works and adds up. Compare it to building a house: You go and lay 1000 bricks all at once and your house is done, OR you lay 50 bricks here, 50 bricks there, and at the end of the day you end up with 1000 bricks and your house is done. The house still gets done, the work is just spread out.

So let’s lay some bricks and Build a House.

Here are 3 quick and easy workouts to lay some bricks:

  1. Take the Stairs. Hospitals are tall, really tall. Which is why there is a good chance you encounter an elevator multiple times a day that teleports you to your destination floor. You may have heard of rumors or myths of something called “the stairs” which is an alternate pathway to your destination. Well, the rumors are true! And they aren’t just in case of a fire either! Sure, the stairs may take a few extra minutes out of your day or leave you out of breath after 10 flights but they are a quick and simple way to burn some extra calories throughout the day. I’m not saying go sprint the stairs like a high school football player on bleachers but a few brisk walks up and down them a day could bring you down a pant size or two without even noticing.

  2. Air Squats. Nurses stand quite a bit, and by that I mean they pretty much never sit down. Which is why they need killer quads and glutes to support all of this standing. This is why Air Squats is an ideal workout to do throughout your shift to burn that vending machine food off or build some sweet leg curves. An easy way to monitor it is to get an accountability partner you work with on shift and each agree to knock out 20-50 every hour. Normally your crotch would split in your scrubs but with our Athletically Designed scrubs they will stretch with your bending! This will only take like 1-5 minutes each time you do it but at the end of the day you will be ready for your first IFBB bikini fitness show. Okay maybe not that but it still all adds up!

  3. Lunges down the Hallway. You know that one patient that calls you every 5 minutes? Go ahead and take your time lunging down the hallway for their “emergency”. DO NOT actually do that! But maybe after you answer their call and meet their needs you can do a few lunges on your way back down the hall? It doesn’t have to be a ton, just 10 or so every time can add up to quite a bit of lunges at the end of your shift. Then when your friends ask you, “Why do you always skip leg day, brah?” you can tell them you are a hallway lunger! Our athletic scrubs are inspired after workout gear which is why they are designed to perform these types of movements. Your legs contain some of the biggest muscles in the body which is why working them uses the most energy and in turn burns the most calories.

As you can see all three of these seem fairly simple and ineffective but if you are consistent with them they can add up to produce some awesome results. Living a healthy lifestyle isn’t a sprint but instead a marathon and sometimes slow and steady wins the race! These small steps can lead to a healthier state of mind and keep you fit throughout your shift!
