Fasting is without a doubt the most effective way to create a caloric deficit through caloric restriction. It’s science I don’t make the rules, fasting is the ultimate fat burner.

Fasting (with regards to caloric restriction) is the willing and purposeful abstinence or reduction of calories for a pre-determined period of time.
Does fasting sound scary to you?
If it does, fear not; it did for me, the first time I was introduced to the idea of fasting.
Most diet and fitness lore, myths, and dogma have perpetuated the belief that any form of caloric restriction (or even not eating every hour on the hour, a favorite scare tactics of supplement companies wanting to sell you protein shakes and BCAAs) will cause your body to go into “starvation mode” and become catabolic.
This simply isn’t true.
It doesn’t even make sense from physiologic and evolutionary point of view. How could humans have risen to the apex species of the planet if their bodies automatically attacked skeletal muscle first (as the result of even the slightest caloric restriction) and saved the fat for last?
So why do most people now believe the body can only attack fat following the exact instructions of a personal trainer (meal timing, a precise macro ratio, and extensive cardio)?
Would it not make more sense for the body to first attack some form of stored energy reserves (fat) before tapping into its muscles?
Of course, this second method makes sense, and that’s because it’s true. The people who tell you otherwise either don’t truly understand fat’s function as a fuel source, or they’re trying to sell you something. I’ll go with the latter by fasting.
Move more, eat less. Or don’t eat at all for while you’re fasting.
Think about it this way: unless you’re already extremely low in body fat and showing deep muscle striations with carved up abs, your body will attack its fat stores before it attacks the muscles. This is the awesomeness of the survival adaptation of the human body. Hundreds of thousands of years of evolution didn’t occur just because the marketers or your confused personal trainer says so. Fasting was a caveman was of life.
Fasting is the ultimate fat burner. So, go get you some fasting in your life.
Fat as a fuel source is of course not necessarily the primary function of fat, but it is for the purposes of the diet and fitness industry and this book. Some argue the most basic function of fat is its role in cell membranes, amino acid transport, fatty acid oxidation, or the production of all-important mineralocorticoids, glucocorticoids, androgens, and estrogens.
